This study pioneers the analysis of what we call "deep-time organizations." We provide detailed comparative historical analyses of some of the oldest existing organizations worldwide from a variety of sectors, from the world's oldest bank (Sveriges Riksbank) to the world's oldest university (University of Al Quaraouiyine) and the world's oldest dynasty (Imperial House of Japan). The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is designed to safeguard the world's crops against extinction, and it's getting a major upgrade to keep it safe. 60 Minutes is going to take you on a journey to the end of the earth to show you a place that might someday save humankind. Yet despite this recognition of strong temporal interdependencies, we still lack understanding of how societal and political organizations can manage interconnections that span several centuries and dozens of generations. The Anthropocene as a new planetary epoch has brought to the foreground the deep-time interconnections of human agency with the earth system. In doing so I aim to disrupt the existing hierarchies of knowledge that champion an impersonal, rational scientific approach and call for a more varied array of knowledges and practices to be taken into account when considering the future ecologies of Svalbard and the broader Arctic region. I bring to light several common aspects, goals and experiences these practices share. By considering the experiences of tourists, researchers and 'scientific tourists' both practically and from an embodied experiential perspective, I challenge the distinctions typically made between these roles.
Through the lens of political ecology, I draw out the uneven power relations of knowledge production that are attached to these labels and their consequences for ongoing efforts for managing sustainable tourism.
Drawing on ethnographic and qualitative research, I use this context to critically explore the identity-categories of 'researcher' and 'tourist'. But back in 2004, when the Seed Vault was proposed, it might equally have been. Svalbard is an 'edge-of-the-world' hot spot for environmental change, political discourse, tourism and scientific research in the Anthropocene. In the Arctic Circle, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault is not waiting for.
